Originally set to expire in 2015, which was highly anticipated and sought after by many people, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders announced that San Diego will continue to host the thousands upon thousands of geeks and geek enthusiasts through 2016 after Comic-Con International (CCI) and the city extended the contract. I’m not complaining, although Seattle should get a shot in future… It just makes sense. Or I’m just biased…
Comic-Con spokesman David Glanzer said city officials and local businesses have helped the event remain in San Diego by allowing organizers to expand beyond the convention center to create a “Comic-Con campus” using meeting space in nearby hotels.
“We were born in San Diego, so our hope is to stay here,” Glanzer said. “But first and foremost, we have to look at the ability to put on a successful show and meet the needs of the people who attend the show.”
A spokesman for the mayor’s office said plans are moving forward to expand the San Diego Convention Center, and city officials hope to break ground on the project next year.
This is the big reason why I’m not complaining. If you ultimately can’t get a badge or badges for SDCC, by all means still get on the first jet smoking to San Diego anyway. There’s so much to do outside of the venue and at various hotels, not to mention Zach Levi’s Nerd HQ, that it would be crazy not to go. San Diego wasn’t too hot, too cold. It was just right. It was beautiful and charming, so it makes sense for San Diego to hold on to Comic-Con.
