19 Looks from NYFW Perfect for Sci-Fi or Dystopian Films – GeekMundo

UgoCamera/IFEMA – Andres Sarda SS 2016

Most people wouldn’t associate sci-fi or dystopian worlds with New York Fashion Week–or high fashion for that matter–but upon further inspection, we found several looks from the runways of NYFW 2015 that could make the cut.

Some of these looks evoke the idea of a society where clothes aren’t as gendered, and that take on a post-modernist ideas.  Other looks would be perfect in fictional countries and worlds that are technologically and scientifically advanced like Black Panther’s Wakanda, The Matrix, or Nnedi Okorafor’s novel Who Fears Death, set in a post-apocalyptic Africa brimming with magical realism.  They blend natural elements and textures with man-made or metallic elements, blending the natural world with the technological.

Here are 19 of the most futuristic, sci-fi movie ready looks from NYFW:

Honorable mention goes to Kanye West’s Yeezy Season line, particularly last year’s collection.  At first, I wasn’t really a fan of West’s collection, and I still wouldn’t pay a ton of money for it–or most any collection unless it seriously stands out–but his pieces reflect a certain disenchantment with society and utilitarianism that would be at home in George Orwell’s 1984 or Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.

In a world where stock markets may have crashed, economic collapse, and climate change have run rampant, I’m pretty sure most of us would be wearing clothes similar to some of these looks, don’t you think?
