With Upfronts going down, we’re getting a steady stream of previews of shows that will be premiering this fall. ABC recently dropped a boatload of trailers for their new fall series, one of which is another Shondaland production. This time, Shonda Rhimes goes all the way back several hundred years to Italy during the Renaissance where the Capulets and the Montagues are still fighting one another despite the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Based on Melinda Taub’s novel of the same name, Rhimes’ Still Star-Crossed has all the drama that you’ve come to love and appreciate her for from shows like Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder.
Synopsis:
“Still Star-Crossed,” a period drama from Shondaland, picks up where the famous story of Romeo and Juliet ends, charting the treachery, palace intrigue and ill-fated romances of the Montagues and Capulets in the wake of the young lovers’ tragic fate. The series is based on the book by Melinda Taub.
Here’s the official trailer:
I’m still confused as to why there needed to be a sequel to Romeo and Juliet. Weren’t their deaths kind of the point? All that pettiness and drama couldn’t keep Romeo and Juliet away from each other, and in the end, both families lost. Keeping the story going is just so confusing to me. That’s not to say that Still Star-Crossed is going to be bad or anything, I just hope that this “sequel” delivers. To be honest, Romeo and Juliet isn’t even my favorite work by Shakespeare, that honor goes to Macbeth, but still… I’ll be watching because I like Rhimes’ way with TV and I am always a big supporter of diverse casts. And please save me the bullcrap about there being no black people in Italy because that would be oh so incorrect.
Still Star-Crossed stars Wade Briggs, Anthony Head, Zuleikha Robinson, Lashana Lynch, Ebonee Noel, Sterling Sulieman, Medalion Rahimi, Grant Bowler, Susan Wooldridge, Torrance Coombs, and Dan Hildebrand.
