It’s going down in “Downtown”, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis‘ very “Thrift Shop”-esque music video for their latest single. The video comes in at just over five minutes, but it features rap royalty like Kool Moe Dee, Melle Mel, and Grandmaster Caz riding around on young ass scooters. And for the baseball fans, Ken Griffey Jr. also has a cameo in this over-the-top ode to the breakdancing films of the 80s.
Just like “Thrift Shop”, Macklemore pokes fun at himself, the excess of materialism in rap in general, all the while playing it cool. If you thought the video was silly, that’s because it was supposed to be. It’s one big parody video, and while some people may be over that gimmick, after what happened yesterday, and all that’s been happening, we could use another happy, slightly absurd music video to talk about.
